Stuart Duncan Talks About His Favorite Ribbon Mic Positions for Recording Banjo
@RoyerLabs Can we hear them RAW without reverb?
Interesting combo. What do you think one is doing the other isn't?
Love the SF12's ....I use a modded Stellar RM7, 1.8 micron ribbon, better tranny and removal of built-in pop filter - stunning! Poor man's SF12...cost about $1100
Rub your stomach and patting your head is childs play in comparison
This sounded beautiful. It reminded me to take my R-10 to my recording session today. I'll bring my DBooster too. (That should get me to the same place as the Hot Rod, right?)
What do you do if you're still not getting any signal (or barely any signal) after following these instructions? I hooked the dbooster up to the R10. I've tried multiple cables and interfaces and wiggled the cables. I turned on the phantom power before plugging stuff in and I tired turning on the phantom power after plugging it all in.
Uh, no examples?
Very high quality mic 🎤
ça rend mieux si vous les placez en mode blumlein. j'ai aussi des micros à ruban et je n'ai jamais trouvé mieux que la position en blumlein.
What a great song.
no way this is a mono recording lol
Please explain badge backwards.
Way to go dB! 😄
Excellent!!
I have one and yes it does exactly what they say it does. I've not tried all the others, but I can say, 110%, one will not be at all disappointed with the dBooster.
Yeah it's pretty a no nonsense and it's priced well too. It's not THAT much more expensive, if at all, compared to other boosters.
fantastic song, fantastic recording and mix.. LOVED IT!❤
Great Microphone!
stop using this guy to sell me microphones!!! :)
are you sure that's a c7?
Sounds very Beatles and that's a massive compliment. Well done.
This is magnificent!!
I still love my R-122-V. Such a beautiful and smooth microphone. The output once captured is soo warm and full that it handles eq to fit whatever mix and narrative is necessary. I got mine to record using it reversed for vocals and some instramants and used to have a U87 for my voice over work. I got rid of the U87 and simply eq to match the desired presence. It is great to understand microphones and response in order to truly find out how much more useful certain ones can be more than others.
Thank you! Question: How far back from the speaker grill is a good starting point?
2 or 3 inches off the grill is what we usually see engineers doing.
For a mic company...your audio in this video is awful...so thin, metallic and sibilant.
Holy crap, that was good!!
Royer could learn a lot from Røde's manufacturing processes.
Russ takes 90 seconds worth of material and condenses it into eight and a half minutes. 🙂
Fantastic. I so want to hear you play that Fireglo Ric 12 on the wall.
Just finished my latest ribbon mic and didnt use ribbon mic foil its too expensive and far too fragile I used the foil from a film capacitor, costs nothing is very rugged and much easier to work with.
I bought one of these from Sweetwater last year and ever since I bought it, it has sounded boomy and muddy, so I'm wondering if this could be the problem. It has NEVER sounded good to my ears. That being said, this video would have been far more helpful if you would have told us how to dismantle the thing to properly inspect it.
HELL YEAH
You place the 57 in a very suboptimal spot to work with the Royer and then slam the 57 for sound like crap? That's lame as hell. Hell that amps didn;t sound all that great either for that matter.
This was really helpful for me. I just got my first Royer R-121, and Stuart Duncan has been a long time favorite musician of mine. I'll be recording banjo tomorrow night in my studio, and now I know I can set up this mic with confidence. Thanks, Stuart!
Is something like this exist for R-10 + SM57?
Not yet. We're thinking about it and may release one someday, but for now it's not on an upcoming products list.
How did I not know that Arturo could play piano this beautifully… what a genius. Some people are just born to give the world great music, and he’s one of them. The mics sound fantastic too
If I am using R10 stero pair, do I need the booster?
?
Great mikes, lousy colors and paint job
I like the extra brightness and versatility of the 122 but the creamy low mids of the 121 immediately reminds me of AC/DC which must be a good thing 😅
That sounds dope also I’m the third person to ever like this video 😜
What Speakers use?
This is a great song, and while I still prefer the Anum version, this stripped down piece is plain good. Thanks for reminding us of the immortal music of David Olney
THank whomever is responsible for putting this back up today. David is no longer with us in person, but he will always be there (here) for us. Damn, he is missed.
Your shock mounts sound better than my mics lol
Thank you for this video! I needed to confirm whether it was safe (in fact necessary) to turn the phantom power on!
With the flexbar can I attach dual mic clips on it. Like if I want to do a 4 mic setup up on a cab?
Now I have to buy a 121. Dame It!
Have you got any other piano tracks with r 122s?
How about one for the r-10???
Prefer the clipping on the 122 , plus less headroom is good on guitars
